2008-2012 UPA Strategic Plan

Strategy - Put Spirit of the Game Front and Center by Applying a Clear Definition, Building a Greater Awareness of its Importance and Use, and Changing Policies to Maximize Adherence

Research conducted as part of the Ultimate Revolution showed that SOTG is one of the most valued aspects of the culture of the sport. A vast majority of players (both UPA members and nonmembers) are deeply committed to its principles, with 84% of respondents saying it is “essential” to Ultimate. However, its is clear that players have different ideas on what SOTG is, whether it can or should be interpreted differently based on level of play, and how players should be held accountable.

Tactic: Prepare written document that clarifies and defines the concept of Spirit of the Game so that the Ultimate community shares a common understanding and language of SOTG. A significant amount of data has been gathered by the UPA over the past year asking players for their thoughts on Spirit of the Game. Data will be analyzed and marketing/communications piece developed for distribution to players, organizers and fans of the game.

Tactic: Implement spirit rating system based on Observer, coach, spectator input. Concern has been expressed that players don’t always agree on the topic of SOTG. A system will be developed whereby feedback can be obtained from those who are part of the experience but not directly involved as on-field competitors.

Tactic: Promote use of UPA established principles and awards system at non-UPA events. The UPA will develop and distribute a package of materials to UPA sanctioned and other events that includes above materials as well as other systems and tools for SOTG adherence used by the UPA at its events.
